THE OTHER SIDE

I just finished listening to THE LIGHT BETWEEN US by Laura Lynne Jackson. Ms. Jackson is a psychic and a medium. It tells the story of the journey Lynn took toward understanding her true purpose in the world, and the ways we are all connected to each other, both here and on the Other Side.

In the book, Ms. Jackson explains how people that have died are with us, just on the Other Side. They are with us, listening to us, experiencing life with us. The image of the other side being one where one side is physical and the other side, well, not. The other side is energy and light and love.

The idea to work on screens came from a vision I had. I had started cross stitching because I had the materials from my grandmother who had passed away. In a dream, I saw that screens separate us. When we die, our body stays on one side of the screen, but our soul can pass through it. The screen is the barrier between our body and our soul. My grandmother had passed through the screen. She could visit me, but I was stuck on one side.

The surface in my work is a metaphor for the thing that separates us. The screen divides space. It places the viewer on one side or the other. The viewer is aware of the other side, and the space on the other side. By creating work on window screens, I can allude to the other side.

In THE LIGHT BETWEEN US, Ms. Jackson communicates with the other side. In my work, I work on a medium that shows what separates us.
