I am currently volunteering with Arts Council of Rockland (ACOR), my local arts organization. I found out in November that they were going to announce a Poet Laurete for our county. I thought that was so cool, and I was so proud of being a part of a county that believed poetry was important part of how we connect and honoring it.
I opened my mouth and said we should get the poet to write a poem and ask local artists to respond. In January, I was told it was a go!
Its funny, I was not worried about getting enough artwork. I knew our county would show up. The organziers were concerned. It was a stretch to organize this.
What got my butt cheeks clenching was getting this poem displayed. I know what I wanted, I wanted it on the glass. I have never done this.
Soooo. today I installed 30 artworks in 3 display windows in the mall. Its a weird space, but cool, not normal. I left one area open for the poem.
Tomorrow I will find out if I can make it happen.
Already, the coolest bit is how excited other artists were to engage in responding to poetry. We are cool people, us artists.
